SU3 is what MSFS 2024 should have been at release

Featured Replies

So it seems like the overwhelming majority of the feedback I have read on SU3 has been positive.  There are still people with issues with SU3, so it's not like MSFS 2024 works very well for everyone, but for most people, MSFS 2024 works quite well now.  Basically, we are at the point right now, where MSFS 2024 Free Flight is stable enough for most people, and where 3rd party developers have had enough time to react and make changes to their products to make it compatible with MSFS 2024.  At the release of MSFS 2024, a lot of 3rd party developers still hadn't had enough time to make their products compatible to MSFS 2024  - for example, Fenix did not have access to the SDK, and was not invited to the MSFS 2024 beta, so they could not do any real work until MSFS 2024 was released.  Career Mode still has bugs, but then again, there is no Career Mode for MSFS 2020 so I am primarily comparing MSFS 2020 Free Flight to MSFS 2024 Free Flight. Besides, while Career Mode still has  bugs in SU3, it's much better and much more stable than at release.  And being able to download content in your Content Manager now, is also a huge change in SU3 - we can download whatever content we want to our hard drive, or we can stream the content if we want.   Anyways, SU3 is probably what should have been released for MSFS 2024.

If the MSFS team is planning on releasing something like MSFS 2028, and they want something comparable in quality to SU3, they will need like 9 months of open public beta testing, where users can join with all their various configurations in the beta test, and 3rd party developers need to have full access as well so they can make their products compatible with MSFS 2028.

I will say that 9 months into MSFS 2024, we are in a much better state than 9 months into MSFS 2020. 9 months into MSFS 2020, there were still a lot of people that were CTDing.  Comparatively, there are far fewer CTDs in Free Flight for MSFS 2024, in its current state (it doesn't mean there are no CTDs in MSFS 2024 for people, it's just far fewer CTDs now compared to 9 months into MSFS 2020).  I think after SU4 is release for MSFS 2024, the MSFS team can start to add new features again in SU5 (SU4 will probably also be focused on bug fixing, and I'm guessing no new features will be added in SU4).

MSFS 2028 could use some new leadership.  Jorg played a fantastic role at the helm delivering 2020, but royally mismanaged 2024.  I’m not seeing anything that makes 2024 a far more compelling sim than 2020.

Not only that, but in some areas it even degraded from FS2020. Till now, including SU3

Must be a good post because the negative nellies are lining up to express their displeasure.

Still good to have something positive 2024 wise on Friday.

Thanks for the post and ride on MSFS 2024!

The "negative nellies" are the ones who want MSFS 2024 to be everything that it should have been when it was released. I have seen more than enough comments suggesting that certain aspects of MSFS 2024 are inferior to MSFS 2020 to make me want to hold on to what I already have.

Smart decision if you ask me. I'm back to FS2020 at least until SU4 Beta starts.

Are you aware that Asobo constantly tweaks the LOD curve and the last major change happened only few days before final SU3 release? That's actually very frustrating for developers.

Is SU3 what it should've been at release? As a VR user it's a No, the LOD curve changes they made in the final beta build have caused issues with many aircraft (default and paid), but then Asobos track record with caring for VR is well known to be quite pathetic (see SU7) so it's no surprise a major issue went ignored whilst they were on a jolly at Gamescon. That and there are still far too many issues, many annoyances and performance is still subpar with relation to VRAM usage not to mention their DX12 code isn't all that, plus as mentioned the constant LOD changes are causing havoc for content creators, the same creators who if it weren't for them MSFS2024 may well of bitten the dust by now.

So no in my eyes it's not and won't be until post-SU4, which I've kind of been "targeting" as "V1.0" for months, to me this product is very clearly still an Early Access/Beta product - which is what it should've been sold as last year.

Yeah, really... I am keeping FS2024 for GA and testing purposes but in the last couple of days I did two consecutive GA/VFR flights with both, one in northern Norway and the other over London with real weather and, although FS2024 was smooth with the C172 and the C208, MSFS felt better, smoother anyway and without pop in and PG morphing, and looked sharper (lights, textures, PG). I don't know why, Dynamic settings was disabled and my connection is very consistent. Probably because of the new LOD system.

Sadly, I see no reason now to fire up FS2024, not even for VFR.

Only if you "walk" or fly over the Grand Canyon and other trailer featured handcrafted areas there is a difference in favor of FS2024.

My only comment on this topic.  I am 68 years old.  Got my SEL PPL at 20 years young.  Served in the USAF for about 14 years as an Air Traffic Controller, both TOWER and TRACON (RAPCON). Was an Instructor for four of those years where I taught both disciplines and more at Kessler AFB, MS.  Our Training made extensive use of Simulators.  Our TOWER simulation was considered State of the Art for many years and received much positive praise from Aviation Press and Professionals.  I bought my first computer sometime around 1985 and purchased Flight Simulator II shortly thereafter and have had owned EVERY version since, plus many more flight simulators from other developers  (Flight Unlimited II anyone).  To those in this thread who chose to constantly harangue and belittle this software and it’s developers I suggest you need to get out and away from flight simulation for awhile because if you don’t appreciate or recognize what an amazing feat this software represents and the long and arduous journey it  took to get here, then maybe Golf is more up your alley.

Peace and Blue skies to all

I think people are choosing to forget the history of 2020 and all the issues.  I know experiences vary, but I just have not had the issues in 2024 that others seem to.  In 2020, I went through 9 months of CTDs and the sim was unplayable.  Everyone blamed my hardware (had to be memory voltage or a bad hard drive)!  Then suddenly with a patch it went away.  Even after, I had to turn off some of the snap views left and right, as those regularly caused my system to crash in 2020.

Maybe 2024 will randomly bite me at some point, who knows?  I've been on the wrong end of things with 2020.

I did not need to wait for SU3.  The only things I even noticed were the fix to the spinning control menus (hated that) and some fixes to ATC and traffc.  Otherwise, things ran fine before, and run fine now.  I've done a ton of flying in the last many months and would not have wanted my sim delayed.

Regardless, some of you need to just wait a year anytime a new sim is released.  Just like pilots talk about "personal minimums", you should have your own personal tolerances.

I happen to be a Game Pass subscriber anyway, so I could test 2024 at no additional cost, and to my surprise, it just worked.  And has kept working.  I've since bought the higher end edition and never looked back.

I have not much to add except to say that I don't recall ever having a single CTD in msfs2020 with over a thousand hours of flying. Except when my cpu cooler was not longer working and one stretch when a switch on a controller was trapped in the on position.

I think the feedback on Steam supports this idea. 2020 had very positive feedback right off the bat, and continued. But 2024 did not have as much positive feedback after launch.
