Beware the Knee Defender

Featured Replies

The knee defender should be banned.  I pay for the extra leg room because I need it, I learned my lesson a long time ago when the person in front of me adjusted their seat several times and each time the frame ground into my knees.  It was a horrible flight.

I use the recline function but I am very careful and recline slowly so the person behind me is aware of what I am doing.  I regard others comfort while enjoying my own.

**EDIT**

I just read that Air Canada and Westjet do not allow the device on their flights:

Yay Canada!

I don't fly very often, but every time the person seated in front of me banged my knees, I let out a very emphatic and loud "Ouch!"

Invariably that person would raise their seat again and apologize... :He He:

It depends on who is the "inconsiderate" one. The person who reclines or the person who prevents that.

A piece of equipment that interferes with the correct function of the seat is technically illegal.

This is a Knee Defender™ Courtesy Card™

I am using Knee Defender. Knee Defender is a small plastic device that helps me protect myself by limiting how much the seat in front of me can recline. I wanted to let you know about this and provide the following information:

___ Unfortunately, my legs are so long that if you recline your seat at all it would immediately bang into my knees.

___ As best I can estimate, you could recline your seat about ____ inches without banging into my knees. If you would like to recline your seat this much at some point during the flight, please let me know and I will adjust my Knee Defender so that is possible.

___ If you would like to recline your seat at some point during the flight, please let me know and I will try to adjust myself and my Knee Defender so that it can be done safely.

I realize that this may be an inconvenience. If so, I hope you will complain to the airline. Maybe working together we can convince the airlines to provide enough space between rows so that people can recline their seats without banging into other passengers.

Thank you for your understanding.

If an arrogant passenger gave me that,i'd immediatelly raise the matter with the cabin crew and ask for knee defender to be removed. I know of no airline that allows them.

I am mixed about this.  I have a bad back, so I need to recline to relieve some pressure on the downward motion.  I also am right on the edge of getting my knees hit (I almost 1" shy of 6'), which usually happens.  Lately, I've been fortunate to afford either Premium Economy (Virgin) or First Class.

Just wait, stand up seating is coming and that will put to rest all the issues with reclining seats.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I can't believe anyone would think manufacturing and marketing such a device would be a good idea. Any average idiot could have predicted the reception they would get, and the subsequent banning by the airlines.

This issue only came up for me yesterday on a flight from krabi back to Bangkok. Im 6ft3" and always pay for a hot seat with air asia except for short flights.

The 5 year old kid in front of me asks mum to recline the seat and she does all the way right into my lap and the little bugger then sits UP playing video games lol

Back to hotseats for me but I could have, would have used the knee device yesterday

Anyone using one of these the airplane will be diverted to the nearest airport and intercepted by fighter jets and you will be arrested and charged and fined and possible prison and placed on a no fly list.  :vava:

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

A second flight was just diverted due to a fight over reclining seats.  This time AA flight heading to Europe.  Actually this might be a great strategy for pax (except for the part where you get charged for interfering with a flight crew).  If enough flights get diverted because of this problem perhaps the airlines will capitulate and change the seat pitch to something humans can actually be comfortable sitting in

I have reclined on very long-haul flight but have always turned around and asked the person behind if it was okay to do so. And have not had any issues.

Long haul flights are a different kettle of fish really. Almost eveyone reclines at some point.

An alternative to the plastic clips would be bayonets. Thus the person who wishes to recline would attach bayonets to his/her seat back and then press the recline button fully!

What would your reaction be if they said "No" on a very long-haul flight?

Well, mine would be: An alternative to the plastic clips would be bayonets. Thus the person who wishes to recline would attach bayonets to his/her seat back and then press the recline button fully!

I think that would resolve the problem don't you? :Worried:
