What's going on with P3D

Featured Replies

It will be 2 years since the release of Prepar3D V2 in November. It seems to me that this softwares development cycle under Microsoft was about 2 year between major releases FS9 2004, FSX 2006 ?

My guess is that Prepar3D V3 will be released in late November 2015. It will be a DX12 Program and designed to run best on Windows 10. It will be 32 bit with excellent VAS management. The developers of every addon you own will be scrambling to update their addons and wondering what they can get away with charging current users for the updates. And it will be a beta release. It will take about 18 months before everyone is complaining about OOM's  in V3.5 and there will be endless speculation on this forum about the imminent release of a 64 bit V4 :-)

Oh, had no idea there was a candy. I would have thought it came from that avatar you use with the little pink beaver.

Based on Robs post and past release dates, I'm calling November 2015 for version 3!

July or August.  Just a guess.  These threads elicit emotions in me like that of a dog which has heard a can opener running.

V3 will be another opportunity for add-on developers to charge for updates, regardless of how much work it actually takes to update their products.

Also it puts OrbX in a bit of an uncomfortable position. They've promised free v2 updates for all their products, but there are still many that haven't been converted yet. Once v3 comes out, it seems like a waste of resources to keep converting products for the old v2 for free. On the other hand, if they break their promise and only release paid-for v3 updates, there might be a backlash.

Basically 3.0 would have to bring some pretty huge improvements to justify the re-investment and re-invention of the wheel.

Very true.

@denali :)

I would say Jan/Feb

Perhaps I am wrong, but to me it would be more logical to release a v2.6 which fixes some minor things + the VAS handling of V2.4..

Then V2 can be "closed' as a good working version.

For people who want more ( more detail , more features , etc. etc. ) there will be v3 with more improvements , new features and a new way of VAS handling. And I think it will be 32 bit too.

Surely I will be one of them  B)

Then in 2016 or 2017 we will see v4 64 bit...

And we will all start with a clean desk.... ^_^

Thanks for the info.

So now we know for sure that there might/maybe be a V3, sometime in the future.

There, maybe, will definitely be a 64bit version of a simulator/game sometime in the future (maybe). (X-Plane does not count)

We know for sure that there will be improvements with future releases.

It could be, or maybe not, that there could be a V4 released sometime in the future, after V3, but there also could be/maybe a series of updates between V3 & V4.

We know for sure that, if a V3 version is released, it probably will not be during June 2015.

We know for sure, that if and when a 64bit version is released, the forums will be probably filled with happy postings, with an equal amount of unhappy ones, or not.

We know for sure that, if V3 is an upgrade & not an update, there will be people asking for discounts, or will be wanting it for free. (also for the future 64bit version).

We know for sure that ALL the fokf posting here are not entertained by P3D, but are entertained by these postings.. ( Is that, according to the EULA's,  allowed?)

We know that Elaine does not like nuts & has a teddy that has laughed it's head off!

I could be worng (or right?)

I can hardly imagine this. LM will not be able to collect from us 50/200 $ for 3.0 this year and another 50/200 $ for 4.0 the next year. Include the paid 64 bit updates for virtually all addons we own today. Include the hassle of numerous reinstallations/fixes, too.

Kind regards, Michael

Lockheed Martin needs additional funding for their F-35! & we are the 'soft' targets.

It appears that they also have the hassle of numerous reinstallations/fixes.

Mega ditto, the whole model is pretty bizzare IMO  By the time 2.3 came along things were adequate to park the entire project and commence full time work on DX12/64bit implementation where there should be a potentially long future.  This incremental upgrade approach has all 3PD's having to make new installers, new this, new that, the unanticipated consequences stressing compatibility--that seems insanely inefficient, drives up costs for all, and really when you look at the net improvements since about 2.3 it's been pretty marginal, but this I ascertain from reading posts here, not from personal experience.   2.3 still runs quite well on my 4y/o machine.   Why bother trying to optimize 32 bit really, especially w/ what DX12 could bring in a 64 bit environment?  Publish a very soft release date for Version 1 64-bit and give developers the SDK for supporting the new version as early as practical.

I've posted this concern of potentially (ORBX update time scales) > (P3D major version update time scales) on the ORBX forum several months ago, but JV was not too excited on this post \-). This is becoming a serious issue, though, even more, as the ORBX range of products is rapidly growing. As an owner of the complete ORBX collection - being not alone - I am not too fond of retiring all these assets immediately. Neither am I interested in paying the full amount for a second time.

I am not a business expert, however, I am sure ORBX will have to establish dedicated paid resources to this process (at best proactively) and to charge a nominal upgrade fee from the user. People like me would be certainly happy on volume discounts.

Sure, we had this update cycle with MSFS before. However, at no time did any of the addon makers provide a comparable product range for the current MSFS version as ORBX does today for P3D. And here we're only talking ORBX, not to mention Aerosoft.

Kind regards, Michael

P3d 2.5 is very dependable for me, so it would take a 64 bit version of the sim to make me update all my add-ons. It's probably coming this year, but considering that it is good practice to run a new sim version with no add-ons for a break-in period, that shouldn't be a problem. Also, none of the 3rd party developers has said whether there will be an upgrade path to P3d 3.0. ORBX has said somewhat coyly that the upgrade won't be free. But that could mean anything from having to buy each add-on from scratch at the full price to paying a modest upgrade fee. Honestly, I'm not going to worry about this until it happens.

so if Laminar can come out with a 64 bit in not too long a time, why cannot LM ?
