When Gartner puts out their Magic Quadrants clearly they haven't surveyed EVERY user of every platform but the numbers are representative of the industry...

I guess this must be an American thing because I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about!

I'm actually surprised 23,000 people took the survey.  I was expecting that number to be lower.  But I'm happy to see it nonetheless

  • I respectfully disagree.  Had '24 delivered on everything it promised including Marketplace, backwards compatibility etc etc there is no way 2020 holds on like this.  I "personally" think this is a di

It's actually a little lower than the prior year (23,736). In 2022 it was 25,400.

The numbers are what I expected to see. I wasn't expecting a whole lot of growth to be honest. Serious simmers at this point would probably be more set in terms of which sim they prefer to use.

sometimes I just have trouble accepting the fact that there are over 20k serious flight simmers out there.

The Gartner Magic Quadrant is what IT executives use to make their decisions for them.

For real at my place we have a "What does Gartner think?" entry on new products.

some could say that the Fenix needed many updates to be complete and a large part od the users still complain that the flare of the aircraft is still just average. On the contrary, the PMDG 777 was fairly complete and really reliable on day 1, something which is pretty rare those days.

Both add-ons are really nice and I use them both with enjoyment.

The beauty of the vote based survey.

One can express their preferences and whats important to them.

For me i have no issues with the fenix.. including the much talked about flare. What i do have issue with is how thin the 777 sounds are (in my own opinion) and the fact that its missing that unique "mechanical" sound that you can use to identify any GE90 without even looking. Its a unique sound that translates the size of the powerplant and its capabilities. It almost sounds right at home being a generator in an industrial factory.  You will hear it most on spool up but it never goes away fully.

I'm not surprised by the sim of choice results and I predict that next year we will see similar results. 😀

MSFS

My biggest surprise in the survey was this line in the email I got from Navigraph:

Airliners rule the skies: In MSFS, 92.2% fly airliners”.

lt’s what I spend most of my time doing, but I’m surprised GA isn’t a bigger chunk of that.

What is also interesting is us "serious simmers" are a money loss for MS. I bought 2020 on sale for like $30. I paid $70 for 2024. No way I was gonna pay for more planes I'm not going to fly.

I've made 3 marketplace transactions. I have 3,100 hours in 2020. 457 in 24. Meanwhile MS paid for all the band with I chew up.

Which is why the MP still not being fully functional in 2024 is where Jorg's feet are probably really to the fire.

Great call out.
I bought the sim and all of my add-ons have been outside the sim via 3rd party.  Similar to you I think despite all of my hours I have 1 MP purchase.

Hence why I had no problem purchasing '24 as I see it offsetting the cloud expense for both sims...

its hilarious we continue to have threads where you all just hate on 2024.  It literally does nothing productive.  If you want to contribute to the future of MSFS,make it better by submitting bug reports.  I submitted a TON when 2020 came out and it improved.  I've submitted about 30 so far in 2024 and it's also improving.

I find you incredibly kind to FS24. I imagine it's a very, very laid-back hobby to be so happy with it.
Your perception is so different from mine that I feel like I'm jet-lagged between Paris and Sydney.
I personally think FS has disrespected me and abused my trust and the money I advanced them for the mediocre and declining results I'm getting with FS24. I don't find FS24 good at all: weather, clouds, Bing map, colors, etc. The only thing I like is the performance. The RTX 4090 helps a lot, of course. So, with this attitude and approach, they can all shut down for good: FS, XP, and P3D…
And just because simulation is my passion doesn't mean I feel obligated to be weak and swallow everything as if it were nothing, just because…
There are so many new possibilities to explore in the vast world of aviation.

I'm wondering how much this is influenced by those flying smaller non-jetliner types not being interested or aware of Navigraph. I make use of their services for flying light piston singles (and it's been great to have it integrated with such products as the PMS GTN 750), but is there some audience skewing going on that trends towards those who use Navigraph vs those who are content flying around in something like a Piper Cub just admiring the scenery? (Yes I'm aware that Navigraph has VFR maps).

Obviously, for various reasons, modern jet airliners seems to have always made up the lion's share of Flightsim users, but I'm wondering if that 92% is not just a bit lower in actuality. I know the Avsim crowd skews towards the all jetliners all the time, as do those on VATSIM (to the point where I've encountered controllers who just don't really know how to handle light aircraft). Maybe those of us that enjoy the smaller things are just super lucky that we have some good devs that cater to us, and maybe lose money doing so?

Seems to support what a lot of us believed and have been saying...  Guess this is the new standard over "Steam Numbers" alone which some always argued wasn't representative however it was very much showing the same trends.  In "my opinion" these numbers are the most definitive indicator of the lack of Execution from Asobo...  Had they succesfully delivered 2024 in the state people were expecting there is NO WAY 2020 holds on like this.  It's purely 24 dropping the ball when it was theirs for the taking.   Undeniable based on the numbers.

2:1 to 2020...  Poor P3D 😞  XP also on the rise...

MSFS Remains King of the Hill

The November launch of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 didn’t automatically sway the entire worldwide pool of simulator pilots. In fact, 52% of respondents reported still using the older Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 as their go-to simulator, making it the most popular choice above all competition. Its sequel, MSFS 2024, follows at 24.9%—reflecting a still impressive migration of users from the previous iteration. In comparison, the 2023 survey showed Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 at 70.8%, highlighting the shift as users transition to the new version. We expect that number to continue to rise.

FlightSim Community Survey 2024 - Favorite Simulator

Only flight simmers would be complaining about a new release having 50% adoption just 90 days after (a very rough) release...SMH 😌

While I certainly agree that v2024's launch was "sub-optimal" and that there is a very literal price being paid by MSobo, it's VERY important to keep in mind that THESE results are not part of a "trend", they are a literal snapshot in time.

For e.g., I'm not gonna do the math, but IIRC, X-Plane v12 was doing far worse at a similar point in it's history. And just look at it now vs v11...

Agree. Also "good" to note that Navigraph only counted the ~16,000 who actually completed the survey 😮

While this is technically the appropriate action to take, it still leaves a lot of info out of the survey.

They did include all the counts in the separate data download - i bet there are some interesting additional perspectives in there.

That's not necessarily a good thing...  They added 2024 and gained 6 points of market share over not doing anything...  NOT a good ROI when your previous generation is more than half the market share and double your latest release.  Think of the Dev expense to gain 6 points of Market Share
Those are all failed metrics.

All the global Navies said similar things about Battleships when Aircraft Carriers first came on the scene...

It's only been just about 5 months since v2024 released. Remember what state v2020 was in at the time? I mean, we didn't get a study level airliner for almost two YEARS, right?

I hope that IniBuilds take note of the results of this survey, and decide to release EGKK Gatwick for both versions of MSFS.

If they look at the results of this survey, they'll keep launching addons in the same state as the A350 🤣

I've started taking a look at it and the data is kinda messy. There aren't any numeric values in the responses. For example, the Column " Which MSFS aircraft do you normally fly? - Guimbal Cabri G2 by Asobo (Helicopter)" If someone indicates the response the row value is "Guimbal Cabri G2 by Asobo (Helicopter)"

I am going to spend some time tonight structuring the data better. I am also going to get rid of some of the things like social media, etc.
