  1. If you've been tearing your hair out over Win 8.1 or 10 joystick and throttle disconnects in P3D, especially with Saitek products, this could be for you. I stumbled across a cure that, so far, has been absolutely, 100-percent effective. This works when disabling selective suspend in device manager does not. It works when changing power settings in Control Panel does not. It works when the problem presents itself in Windows 8.1 OR 10. Here goes. Search the registry for this string, EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled=1, where the device it refers to corresponds to a joystick, pedals, throttle quadrant and so on. Change it to read EnhancedPowerManagementEnabled=0 Reboot. Smile. Bear in mind, though, this needs to be redone every single frickin' time you upgrade Windows, as the Windows install stomps on those Registry keys. Sorry "resets them to the 'proper' values." Hope this settles it once and for all
  2. I've had fsx with SP1 SP2 and acceleration running on my HP Envy with windows 8 fine for the past few months. There was some crashing at the start but it stopped after I did the UIAutomationcore.dll fix. Since then it was all fine, but then 2 days ago my PC did an annoying automatic update for windows 8. When i tried starting fsx, the start screen came up for about 3 mins then a fatal error message appeared. I've tried over and over again to fix it. I uninstalled addons i added right before this, updated my drivers, repaired acceleration, changed the folder permissions, and repeated the UIAutomationcore.dll fix in case it reset. NONE OF THEM WORKED. Many forums recommended a complete reinstall, but i have a huge amount of addons that i do not feel like reinstalling, too (plus many of them are hard to find again). On top of that, some people said reinstalling doesnt work, so i dont want to spend all that time just to find out fsx still crashes. I REPEAT: A REINSTALL IS THE LAST RESORT. To find out what was causing it i ran it with appcrashview, but i cant make sense of it (im not familiar with programming). Heres what i got: _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Version=1 EventType=BEX EventTime=130441324786139834 ReportType=2 Consent=1 UploadTime=130441324786764853 ReportIdentifier=d992ec3b-d7a4-11e3-bece-00c2c60072af IntegratorReportIdentifier=d992ec3a-d7a4-11e3-bece-00c2c60072af WOW64=1 Response.BucketId=22babecc860e0aba0a8becb8ad234190 Response.BucketTable=5 Response.LegacyBucketId=981331481 Response.type=4 Sig[0].Name=Application Name Sig[0].Value=fsx.exe Sig[1].Name=Application Version Sig[1].Value=10.0.61637.0 Sig[2].Name=Application Timestamp Sig[2].Value=46fadb14 Sig[3].Name=Fault Module Name Sig[3].Value=unknown Sig[4].Name=Fault Module Version Sig[4].Value=0.0.0.0 Sig[5].Name=Fault Module Timestamp Sig[5].Value=00000000 Sig[6].Name=Exception Offset Sig[6].Value=00650074 Sig[7].Name=Exception Code Sig[7].Value=c0000005 Sig[8].Name=Exception Data Sig[8].Value=00000008 DynamicSig[1].Name=OS Version DynamicSig[1].Value=6.3.9600.2.0.0.768.101 DynamicSig[2].Name=Locale ID DynamicSig[2].Value=1033 UI[2]=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\fsx.exe UI[3]=A fatal error occurred. Hi, I have just bought a new Dell inspiron 15r (unfortunately with defaulted windows 8) and have installed FSX on it, but notice it keeps crashing whenever I start, load, save or end a flight when I've crashed the plane. I have installed the 2sp's for FSX but that hasn't fixed the problem. I have also updated win 8 to 8.1 but that still hasn't fixed the problem. I only use Just Flight 742s, 743s, 332s, 333s, 342s, 343s, and md80s and have no freeware planes taken out. All of the settings except graphics and aircraft quality are at absolute minimal! How do I fix this? (BTW I also have an unused Win 7 Dell XPS Gaming Laptop that's currently at the repair shop 'cause of some hard drive difficulty. Specs: Dell inspiron 15r Windows 8.1 8gb ram radeon graphics i7 intel proccessing chip
  4. Hey, I am very apprecitative of Pete Dowson's FSUIPC, as it is the lifesaver for many things in FSX/Prepar3d. I only used it for the Joystick support as it helped me (and so many countless fsx/p3d users) to avoid the dreadful joystick disconnects. While I was in the process of updating my P3D optimization doc (old version is on the Prepar3d section), I decided to take a one more look at the joystick issue, and I may have found a very elegant solution. Windows 8 is super fast in desktop mode (with classic shell as start button) and I do like the SSD optimization by default in it. There are some quirks in it, but for the most part everything works great in desktop mode. Anyway long story short - I have not had a Joystick disconnect in P3D (with Orbx/Rex/Opusfsx/Mytraffic 5.4C) for 3 hours (running in full screen windowed triple screen mode). I also decided to install clean FSX for testing. My FSX is running in windowed mode minimized, while I type this post and it was running in full screen mode for 3 hours with zero joystick disconnect earlier on. I am still testing so please stay tuned for further updates, I do not want to raise hopes and expectations. It is still in testing and if everything is successful on my end, I will post instructions with pictures etc on my website (Estimated time: after stock market closes at 4pm EST). My question to you all is - do you want me to install Windows 8.1 and confirm on it too? I am just suprised that Microsoft released it few days early for MSDN/Technet subscribers. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed. Skywolf
  5. I've upgraded from Win7 64bit Home Pre. to Win8 64 bit Pro. Now I get activation window every time I start Active Sky. I found similar topic in these forum, but it's for SSD device with same problem. I don't have SSD. Anyone with same problem?
  6. Hello, I know that this may have been asked multiple times, however I am curious. Currently, I am running Windows 7 64-bit and I am currently getting decent performance out of FSX with medium high settings. I have been reading about the benefits of Windows 8 in terms of being a better system resource handler than Windows 7 currently does, so as a result I am very interesting into upgrading to the next version of Windows as soon as I upgrade my computer's RAM memory capacity. As a result of this prospect, I would like to answer the following questions. Does FSX in Windows 8 behaves in the same way as in Windows 7? Are there any installation problems that I should be aware of? When running FSX on Windows 8 have there been any changes in performance (positive or negative) when compared to Windows 7? Thanks for your time and answers.
  7. Dear PMDG, I've installed FSX on a Windows 8 Pro x64 clean installation. Initially I had some troubles (sporadic sys errors) with FSX. I solved everything uninstalling and re-installing FSX, following carefully this sequence: install FSX (Deluxe Edition), run FSX and load a flight (don't save), close FSX, restart system, install FSX-SP1, run FSX and load a flight (don't save), close FSX, install FSX-SP2, run FSX and load a flight (don't save), close FSX, restart system, run (manually) windows update, run / configure FSX settings. Then installed FSUIPC 4.853 add-on and AI traffic (WOAI). After this procedure FSX runs (for hours) without any problem. In this environment I've installed the PMDG MD-11 X that seems to work properly (I had some flights apparently without any trouble). Now, I would like to buy (and fly) the 737NGX, so the questions are: - Is the 737NGX compatible with this FSX / Windows 8 x64 environment? - If not, what are the known issues and what is PMDG doing to fix them? 8. Hello everyone: I'm having problems when I'm trying to activate FSX on Windows 8, the message said that I exceeded the limit of activations, however I don't have that problem on Win 7, after some tests, I noticed that I'm able to activate on Win 7, but no Win 8, Win 8.1 and also Win Vista. I tried everything like compatibility mode, run as administrator, turn off UAC and reinstall FSX. I tried to find this problem in google, but with no luck. Sorry for my English. Regards, Walter Almaraz
  9. Hi simmers, I recently bought a high end computer (wow) with Windows 8 64 bit. FS 9 works great with all features on with 60 to 80 fps. However in full screen mode, I have no airplane picture in the set up screen. It appears immy in non full screen mode. Has anyone a clou how to fix this? Happy flying, Eef from the Netherlands
  10. Hey everyone, I believe I have solved the joystick woes with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I have done 2 days of stress testing FSX and P3D with multiple installs of the program and OS, and I haven't had a disconnect yet. Before I go further - I want to give my thanks to certain individuals who have helped me and inspired me to solve this joystick annoyance. 1) Word Not Allowed for having his awesome guides 2) AVSIM's staff/team for creating the amazing Hardware/Software Guide to FSX/P3D 3) Peter Dowson's FSUIPC utility (it got me through the periods when no joystick fix was avialable) 4) Orbx Team - Thank you Global and your Tips and Tricks Forum section 5) NickN's - FSX Computer System Guide 6) Ranak Jones of "Rogue's Guide to Acquisition: Principles of Final Frontier" for sending me a spare XFX 6970 for my system and pointing me to Windows 8 Registry to search for USB Device GUIDs potential errors 7) Microsoft MSDN for having Windows 8.1 Pro for testing/evaluation purposes only. 8) LM Prepar3d Developer Network Testing: 1) FullScreen FSX in Eyefinity Mode (5760x1200) for 3 hours+ 2) Windowed FSX in triple screen mode and 1920x1200 for 4 hours+ 3) Multiple active windows on top of FSX Windowed in background for 4 hours+ 4) Testing was done with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports FSX testing was in Win 8.1 and 8, and P3D 1.4 was in Win 8. My System Cpu: i5-750 (intel 1156 cpu) overclocked to 4.1Ghz Memory: 8GB DDR3 Storage: 1xSamsung 830 SSD at Sata III (Main drive), Intel 80GB SSD at Sata II speeds, 1 TB hitachi mechanical HDD at sata II <- all connected to PCIEx4 Sata III controller) Motherboard: MSI Fuzion p55A - has native usb 2.0 and Renesas USB 3.0 controller Video: New XFX 6970 2GB with latest ATI drivers OS - Windows 8 Pro Clean install / Windows 8.1 Clean Install Joystick: Thurstmaster Hotas X Windows 8 Solution - (FSX / Prepar3d 1.4) 1) Make sure power management features are off or set to high 2) Most important setting is USB Selective Suspend Setting is Disabled (we all knew this) Honestly, that setting does not disable USB selective suspend in Windows 8 (this is for Windows 8 only), like it promises. The power management on USB devices is set to Selective Suspend Please see your HID Devices, USB Input Device and USB Root Hub Devices - They are STILL set to Suspend. You have to turn OFF the manual power savings one by one to all USB Devices/Compositive Devices and the all the USB Root Hubs (this is v.important). If it says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and is checked then please UNCHECK it For example like this This was discovered when I was searching for Joystick UID's in Windows 8 based on Ranak's suggestion. This is where stuff gets weird for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I am no registry expert, but GUID's for my joystick is half correct and half backwards as compared to one listed in FSUIPC's ini file See Pic - Windows Registry And my Joystick GUID in FSUIPC So for some reason half of the GUID is backwards in Registry - I do not know if that is normal or not but that led me to search all the usb devices/ports in Device Manager. Here I found all the power saving features were somehow enabled when Windows Power Management is explicitly set to disable. Recap So for Windows 8 Pro ONLY - Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and make sure Windows Power management also has Selective Suspend set to Disabled. Prepar3d 1.4 - Please have JOYSTICKS=1 in [CONTROLS] in P3D.cfg (more on this later) Windows 8.1 Pro (RTM Version) - FSX TEST No joystick disconnects with 1 Setting change Only - Joystick works in Windows 8.1 Pro I am seeing that all devices still have the USB Power Management check in windows 8.1 but in FSX with PNW, and Bowerman addon, Carenado B200 - Joystick did not disconnect. The only crash I got was from latest FSUIPC 4.92. If in Windows 8.1 you have joystick disconnects, then just turn off all those power management features as listed in for Windows 8. Miscellaneous Info FSUIPC I have it installed but it Zero Joystick Configuration in all tests. I hope this helps everyone - as Windows 8.1 Pro definitely works fantastic with no joysticks issues so far. And Windows 8 works with all power management features individually turned off in all those sections listed. Have a great day, Skywolf
  11. This problem has really been bothering me for a long time. I have tried basically everything in the book to solve it. When I switch tasks in flight, say to check vpilot or go to chrome, my controller resets and causes fsx not to read it anymore. I tried porting it through FSUIPC and the same problem occured. I've gone through device manager(making sure it doesn't cut off for power saving), and did the same thing in control panel. I have run fsx in compatability mode, still no luck. When I check fsuipc anything to do with the yoke disappears. I've updated the drivers on saitek, and the problem is still there. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with vas because whenever I go into a high end scenery area or I use a heavy payware aircraft it tends to happen more often. It's literally making it impossible to fly because I can't seem to go through a flight without this problem occuring. Sometimes I don't even need to do a task switch to get this to trigger, the yoke itself will just blip on and off and fsx will stop reading the yoke. This also happens with almost all my other joysticks as well. The only way I know about fixing it is by switching between fullscreen and windowed mode a ton of times, but that only works to a point. I am completely at a loss of what to do next. I've heard its a common problem with windows 8, but I still have no idea how to solve it.
  12. Hello everyone, I had finally got my P3D v2.5 , but when i try to run it , the Sim looks sharp , i have tried different settings whether from sim settings or AMD CCC, oh , BTW here is my hardware spec. HP Pavilion g6 2321 Windows 8.1 RAM 6GB 750 HDD AMD Radeon HD 7670M 2GB, Thanks for advance , and I will be very thankful to those who will help me .
  13. I will keep this as short as possible. Running fsx on a windows 8 platform with a windows 7 compatibility setting. Was working ok until I added megascenery los vegas... is when the trouble began. I uninstalled the scenery package and my sim has not been the same since. Now when I try to run the sim, it just gives me error msgs. I tried with the advice of a fellow simmer to add uiautomationcore.dll.but this did not work either. My windows is a 64 bit os but the sim is a 32 bit program. Anyone with a working knowledge of countering this issue is most welcome to help!
  14. Hello. As I understand it there are basically 4 versions of Windows 8. Windows 8 32-bit and 64-bit, plus Windows 8 Pro 32 bit and 64-bit Are there people that are running FSX successfully under all of these versions? Thanks
  15. does windows 8 work with fsx whenever I try to load it the screen comes up with this fatal error occurred I want to run fsx PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
  16. Hi, I have recently built a new PC, installed Windows 8 and then tried to install Microsoft Flight. After downloading the full 1.8Gb package and starting the install it gave me an error message and terminated - very frustrating. Has anyone else had this experience and found a solution, or if not could you offer me any advice that could help me get it installed. I loved MS Flight when I tried it recently so i'm really keen to get a solution. I really appreciate your input. Regards Peter
  17. I created this account for the sole purpose of seeing if the AVSIM braintrust had the answer to my problem. I didn't find it so I want to share it with everyone. The situation: Brand new Windows 8 x64 laptop with great specs FSX Deluxe installed with absolutely no issue I wanted to tweak my home airport The problem: The FSX SDK is required for some 3rd party addonsNo big deal, right? The SDK is included on the FSX install disk. Except (DUN DUN DUN) - The bleeping installer for the RTM SDK would simply not successfully run. Every time the installer throws error "1628: Failed to complete installation." You can Google your heart out about Windows 8, FSX SDK, Flight Simulator X SDK Windows 8, or any combination thereof and not find a single helpful link within spitting distance. You will find a mountain of links about error 1678 telling you to rename the InstallShield folder, kill some processes, re-install InstallShield (you can't, Win8 won't recognize older versions), or create a new user account (link to Microsoft's article on this error). Forget it. On Win8 this is a complete waste of time. The solution: All that preamble aside, the solution was incredibly simple in comparison to all the hoops I was trying to jump through. The double-secret-probation Administrator account. Win8's admin account is disabled by default. Even when you choose "Run as administrator" you're not really running as THE ADMINISTRATOR. Here's what you do, and here's a link to a comprehensive guide to this super admin account. Open an elevated command prompt. Type this command and hit enter: net user administrator /active:yes Hit Win+L to lock your computer. At the login screen, click the leftward-pointing arrow at the top left of your login picture. Click on the Administrator account. Find your troublesome installer and run it. Voila! Your SDK is installed! Install SDK SP1a and SP2 as needed. Log out of the admin account by going back to the Start screen, clicking Administrator in the top right corner and choosing Sign out. Log back in as your normal account IMPORTANT! For security's sake, disable the super admin account when you're done by running this command in an elevated prompt: net user administrator /active:no Happy flying - TangoPapa
  18. I tried posting on the MS support forum but had no luck. I also posted on flightsim.com and was advised to ask here. I have run FSX (Flight Simulator X) on my old Windows 7 machine for several years but have now upgraded to a new Windows 8 PC. However, when I try installing FSX from the disk, it gets to the end of the installation, generates a 1722 error code, rolls back the installation and displays a 1603 error. I have tried this on both machines and running the installation in several compatibility modes but I keep getting the same issue. I tried to copy the installation from my old PC to my new one but the game wouldn't load. I have also tried clearing my registry and installing it but that hasn't worked. Is there anything else I can do? It is FSX Gold edition if that helps? I have also attached a screenshot of the error message. Post on flightsim can be found here. Post on MS support forum (none of their suggestions worked) can be found here.
  19. Hello, I am thinking of getting into this business of building a FSX/Video Editing computer for myself and as a result I am doing some research on which components could be best to get the job done. Okay, my planned budget for the rig is $1,300 dollars and I only plan to have FSX, Sony Vegas, and Microsoft Office as the major programs for my computer. I am not much of a gamer outside of Microsoft Flight Simulator. My mindset for the computer is getting the best bang for the buck in terms of FSX and Sony Vegas performance. My initial research has led me to pick the following hardware components. AMD FX8350 Processor Clocked at 4.0 GHz (TurboCore up to 4.2GHz) AsRock 970 Extreme4 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti with 2GB of Video Memory Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB 240-pin DDR3 1600 RAM Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 60GB SSD (for Windows 8 installation) Seagate 1TB 7200rpm Drive (FSX, Office, and Sony Vegas will go here, may buy additional HDD for Sony Vegas use exclusively if warranted). Windows 8 64bit LG BluRay Drive Corsair HX750 750-Watt Power Supply Before finishing this write-up, I would like to explain why I went with AMD. Part of the reason is economics, I found very little difference between the AMD 8350 processor versus the Core i5K edition to justify the latter's retail price, and given AMD's reputation of being a good over clocker compared to Intel which open the door for expandability (I know that I will need an aftermarket cooler if I decide to over clock). The second reason for my initial AMD decision is that Video Editors like a lot of Cores to do rendering, I find that the AMD 8350 seems to be a good processor for that given its sheer core advantage over Intel's current generation solutions. Given that AMD is under a bad rap recently in the tech world, I would like to ask about the experience that other members of the AVSIM community have had with the AMD FX-Series processors and FSX and if I should expect to run FSX a High Settings (I know Maximum Settings in FSX is next to impossible even in current systems :( ) Also, I wonder if the NVIDIA video card will suffice for FSX? One last thing, I am not ruling out using FS9 on this computer as well given that this particular simulator is still going on strong even 10 years after its general availability. Thanks again for your assistance!
  20. Hello, Guys! I'm tired to see that Flight Simulator X always stuck in Windows 8. This is quite bad that Microsoft that they are unable to fix the bugs of Windows 8. Same FSX drive very well on Windows 7 but not on Windows 8. I changed the FSX's compatibility to Windows 7 but FSX still doing same thing. I don't know why? What compatibility mean? Is that mean, if you change software Compatibly to any other Windows then that software will run in that Windows. But it doesn't happen for me. If any one see my error then tell me how to change FSX's compatibility to Windows 7 in Windows 8. If you know any other solution, then please tell me. I don't want to remove Windows 8. Regards,
  21. Hello, I'm trying to activate the 777 on FSX SP2 Windows 8.1. But I got this message after entering the serial: "Unable to connect to activation server" and few seconds later it shows "invalid serial number". How can I fix this? Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Sauqy
  22. What are some good paywhere aircraft for FS9 that will work with windows 8?
  23. Hi all, I am in the midst of making "The Big Change" going from FS9 to FSX. Yes it's been a few years, but I recently bought a new system good enough to give me a nice experience in FSX. However, during the installation of FSX (Gold) the other day, I was a bit excited and missed to create a custom directory for FSX. Now, I do have an SSD set aside for FSX alone. This is the disk I installed it on, but under a "Program Files (x86)" directory. From what I've heard, this could produce problems, even though it actually sits on a completely different physical disk from Windows 8. I tried to uninstall FSX but ran into trouble.. Acceleration uninstalled just fine, but when inserting the FSX Disc1 and running setup, there was no option to Uninstall. Neither does FSX show up in the Control Panel-->Applications. So my two questions are: 1. Do I need to re-install FSX, due to the directory it was installed in? 2. If so, how do I properly uninstall FSX? Any help is appreciated. Kind Regards /J PS I don't want any replies saying "Install Windows 7 instead, Windows 8 sucks".
  24. Hello I am have some issues with my Saitek Cyborg X. I am currently using Windows 8.1 (which I hate). I have an issue - if I minimise my flight sim, maybe to check the weather or activate SmartCARS (when I'm flying for a VA), my controls will no longer work (this is when using default FSX settings - not FSUIPC). I know my controller is still working because I can still change view, which is controlled by EZCA. So for some reason, FSX seems to lose connectivity to my controller. So I'm trying to set my controls using FSUIPC. I have a registered version, but for whatever reason, it will not register any buttons etc. I press a button on my controller but FSUIPC doesn't seems to recognise it. Any ideas? Thanks Matthew
