Finally! DC-8 For FSX!

Recommended Posts

The DC-8 idles at 2.0 EPR. T/O thrust for the 707-300b at sea level, -5 to 25c is about 1.82.  T/O thrust for the 727-100 in same conditions is 2.10. So something is a bit off here. CS 707 has a beautiful VC  and has more texture and higher definition than the JF DC-8.  CS 707 night lighting is not the best. DC-8 appears to more accurate. Of course the CS 707 is loaded with bugs that have been reported years ago. CS has no interest in fixing them.  JF i'm sure will address reported issues.

I didn't get a chance to play with it much. I couldn't get the VOR/ COMM to move, nor could I get the VOLT/ FREQUENCY knob to rotate. Can't really fly VOR-VOR without a frequency so I'm grounded until I hear back from support. Main battery is on and internal battery power is on as well. Batteries on or off should not effect the ability  to rotate the voltage knob though.   Anyone else have these issues? I Uninstalled, turned off AV and ran installer as Admin. Same results.

The DC-8 idles at 2.0 EPR.

That's not encouraging.  Those are the kinds of values that FSX's internal EPR calculations produce.  FSX's internal EPR values are totally borked--that's been known since release in 2006.  To get EPR right requires the panel programmer to compute a proper value based on other engine parameters.  Using FSX's internal EPR values on the gauge would constitute a pretty major rookie error.

How about fuel crossfeeding...does that work right?  That's another area where a gauge programmer who uses FSX's flawed default behavior often produces a serious dysfunctional break from reality.

Note how the flap position gauge appears to be not working.

Thanks for posting these ER!

The panel does look good at night.

How about fuel crossfeeding...does that work right?

I didn't get a chance to cross-feed. Too many essential switches and knobs aren't functioning for me to really fly it.I went to the tutorial flight. Right at the start of the demonstration, knobs weren't moving that should be according to the tutorial.  Probably an install gone arye.

CS 707 cross feeds perfectly and accurately. A true miracle there.

Correct ( or close to it) EPR values means alot on these steam planes that have no FMC or auto throttle guidance.  Perhaps the JF staff can check into that.  The CS classics were a mess in all engine values and FDE. A few CS forum members did thier home work and came up with solutions that got those things flying by real world docs. So it is possible. Not really sure how far the staff wants to go with this model. It gets up and fly's just fine and its priced fairly. The sound package is top notch.

I found both radios worked fine Brian, though I admit getting the click spot is a bit awkward. Looking down to the right from the normal view with the hat switch works best.

Agree about the dodgy EPR though. That's presumably why I can't find any performance tables in the package.

Unfortunately without EPR settings, fuel trip planing and speed guide this plane is just a toy like default FSX planes.

I hope JF will come a bit more seriously with coming service pack.

BTW - Volt&Freq. knob does not rotate at all same as smoke detector knob. FPS is jumping like crazy and VC view is jerky.

I can confirm I have bad fluctuating FPS too.     I am locked at 30 and am seeing 29.9 most of the time but with some annoying dips to 12 FPS that make the overall experience stuttery.    This is with ALL of the smoke effects turned off in the config.

IIRC JF placed a few hard limits on the EPR in the L-1011 to mitigate this problem. It ain't pretty but it works - well sort of. I'm assuming this is what they're doing (or will do) in the DC-8

There's no other way of fixing the FSX EPR problem other than developing a custom EPR simulation, like the PMDG 747.

The issue with the EPR is just down to bothering to do it right. It's been broken is FS for ever and most add-on's are released with it still broken. As you said PMDG fixed it, and so did the DF 727 8 years ago.

Seems to me that AH are up to their usual trick of dressing a default aircraft up to look like something else. Default jet turbine model, default AP and probably a mostly default FDE as well. Shame - I had some hopes for this.

I have exact that problem too, stutters, and dropping flickering fps, and also long loading time on fuselage testures when jumping from the vc to the outside wiev!

Frustrating it is indeed.

Yeah, I get the obvious. My point was that it's a shame that AH were the design house tasked with this as this is very much their standard offering. Since it's the only FSX-specific DC-8 and that in itself is such a rarity, it's seems such a missed opportunity.
