New "revolutionary" version of Active Sky coming

BTW, of COURSE the developer is trying to maintain a high level of interest in their product line in the face of increasing competition. Doing that is hardly a "marketing gimmick", it's just good sense.

Amen to that!

I tend to agree. An announcement of a forthcoming announcement "in the coming days". Here we are three weeks later. If this is any indication that they cannot even get the announcement out in an orderly fashion then when they announce details I would suspect the "coming soon" is a long way off. Think they want to stem the tide of defections. I smell hyperbole.

We'll announce details fairly soon, but right now we're focused on finishing the software and finalizing the feature list.  Sometimes these things take longer than expected, but it is important that things happen in the correct order.  Our teaser information about our new product was placed on our website directed to our customers, and I believe potential customers appreciate the information that a new product is in the works.  We have not made an official "press" announcement yet.

I strongly disagree with the assumptions however.  We support ALL developers including competitive products.  We encourage everyone to support our competition just as they do us.

So, so true.  And when a developer says "it's an FSX limitation", some of us howl in protest, then when a developer says they've found a way around it, others say "that's impossible, it's an FSX limitation".

At this point, the original posting was interesting.  It still is.  Hopefully when they're ready the developer will say more and as we get more information, THEN we can evaluate it.  Personally, I'd wait until then to form much in the way of an opinion on the product.  Just sayin'.

Oh please, Scott, stop being so reasonable! That's simply bad form around here... :P

It is a very bold statement... "WITHOUT COMPROMISE" this tells me it will do what is says it will do on the tin.

Granted, we don't know what it says on the tin yet, but as a developer, if you've discovered new ways to do stuff, it takes time to write it and overcome unforeseen issues.

The feature list is already written because this forms your schedule of work. If I was the developer, and my software was in beta would I release such a statement. Of course. It's the sensible thing to do. It makes total commercial sense.

You release a statement and wait for the community to start discussions about how it can't be done and that its impossible blah blah. That of course they must be struggling because theres been complete silence. The longer the silence the better. Again good commercial practice.

If they do deliver on their statement, then fantastic FSX takes yet another step forwards. If they don't, its going to be a difficult statement to live down.

Sorry Wayne.  It came over me in a rush, but...  I'll get better (er, 'worser'?), I promise.

Scott

Patience is a virtue.

Ha, nobody in this community has any patience, just look at any developers forum "when is it being released" over and over again, LOL

I am still using an older AS for weather, so if this can give me better visuals/more accuracy, and good performance, I think it might be time to upgrade.

I hope so but it might just be "marketing".  Just to prove the point I just did a google search on ads with those words and there is one from Ford, Nescafe, Toyota, and the list goes on and on.  I am guessing that there are some compromises in these products.

Regarding the Op's comment about why this preview tidbit from Damian is not more widely known, I've been scratching my head as well.  True, it was only posted on Hifi's internal website, but with how news travels in this day and age, I'm surprised there has not been more discussion/conjecture here on AVSIM.  Perhaps the PMDG 777 has absorbed the most attention?

I really really hope Damian found a way to bypass the faulty FSX weather engine, because if the product manages to live up to the hype, FSX would feel like FSXI.  I'd love to try OPUS, as I'm tiring of the disadvantages of global weather, such as contrails from AI on the ground, cloudscapes with no variation, and aloft winds reported on the ground level.  But as a tubeliner flyer, I must have stable and accurate winds aloft.  Opus may have gotten better in this respect, but I don't know.

I hear what people are saying about the virtues of a simple weather program, and as a former longtime Active Sky Evolution owner,  I will say that it's taking me a while to get used to the myriad buttons and pages of AS2012.   It has a very cluttered look.  However, I need some of the features found among that clutter to truly enjoy tubeliner flights in PMDG products.  Historical weather is a must, and Active Sky has this feature nailed.  The weather briefing page is a must for a readable interpretation of the winds by waypoint, and especially important when inputting descent winds into the FMC.  So while some people don't need all the bells and whistles seen in full featured products like AS2012, i.e. GA flyers, I need those additional features and fancy screens because they help me in my flight planning in the big birds and most importantly, in avoiding running out of fuel after a 14 hour trip in the 777!

Is it possible for Damian to make a one size fits all product that addresses the pros and cons of the global vs. station based weather modes and merges the two approaches into one, requiring a total rewrite of the weather simulator within FSX?  Anything is possible, look at what PMDG has managed to do despite roadblocks put in place by the poor code in the sim.  But I also remember other developers who over promised and under delivered, like two FS9 Airbus products that were supposed to circumvent FSX and run their own fly by wire simulation.  One failed miserably, and the other was shelved while in development.

I am rooting for Damian, but please deliver.  I had high hopes for another graphics program that promised a game changing weather engine, but never arrived.  I'm sure there is some credibility to his bold statement, because he has now staked his company's stellar reputation on the line.  If HiFi manages to revolutionize one of the most important functions in flight simulator, he will have a license to mint money!

I hope so but it might just be "marketing".

Having spent the better part of 20 years in marketing in a past life, perhaps like lawyers I'm a bit overly sensitive, but...  once again, of course it's marketing.  Companies that don't market themselves and their products don't survive.  Now, if you mean that perhaps it's just hype, or maybe only a bit of hyperbole, yep perhaps so - time will tell.  But even having said that, you're pulling the words you're comparing to these ads out of context in several ways.  First, the words were used specific to problems (and compromises) we've all had to one degree or another with all existing wx engines in FSX, and second the overall context was, as was just noted by Damian, a simple teaser posting on their own customer forum.

Please note, I'm not in any way associated with HiFi, not even as a former customer at this point.  I'm just an interested wx junkie who's a bit bemused at people already building camps and analyzing words.

Damian, I'm looking forward to the specific feature list, and my ears are definitely perked.

Scott

Hey, don't get me wrong, I wish all the best to Damian and his team. I what he wrote comes to pass, I'll buy it the day of release. If it fails to live up to the "without compromise" then it will IMO rank up there with Airsimmer. I do wish him success because good as FSGRW is, weather programs to date have to live within fsx old engine. Hopefully he found a way around it, much like PMDG did with their software.

I will say though, the phrase, "without compromise" is very subjective.

And I was going to get FSGRW before I heard about the imminent future announcement by HiFi in this thread. So now I'll be waiting for the announcement. The teaser has worked very well on me, now I'll put off buying a wx program before the announcement and likely afterwards. I'm almost unhappy.

Thanks,

Dirk.

This is very exciting news indeed. AS2012 is my favourite weather engine bar none

We've posted some further details about the product at the link in the OP.  We'll be updating that thread with further information and additional teasers, so if you are interested in this product's development, that will be where to hear about it first.  Thanks!

Having read the details I'm much more happy now, thanks!

Dirk.

Got OpusFSX, got REX, was on the verge to invest in FSGRW, but now I think I'll have to wait to see where this is going:-) Maybe I should just get them all and end the drama thats going on in my brain! Love this competition!
