FS2024 is not ready ... and shouldn't be released

Hi,

Just finished taking off from over sixty (all on video) 2024 airports, everything looked great. Every once in a while I'd have a crash to desktop, but it's still in testing. Overall I like the new setup and glad I picked up he Deluxe Premium package.

  • It must be so frustrating for the devs / Jorg to drop in on threads like this, having explicitly and repeatedly told us it’s an alpha for telemetry sourcing, to say on the intro page for the download

  • Sounds like you missed out on a fortune making money for the most popular sim ever made.     Questionable business decision.

  • With all due respect,   If the mentality of some strong voices in avsim had their views we would all still be on a broken P3d platform. It really does seem to be the place for the metaphor

The more I see of this sim, the more concerned I am getting.

Why? There are alternatives for you to use. Besides that, as you may have read in this and other threads, what we have seen this weekend is a tech alpha, not representative of the final product.

Mods and Admins please lock these unnecessary threads. Please. People are actually acting like the next apocalypse is about to be happening.

The topic isn’t unnecessary and the OP is entitled to express his opinion. If you choose to ignore it that’s your right. Reading through the four pages so far I can see plenty of unnecessary comments but none that break forum rules so they remain visible.

I know there are alternatives but I am talking about FS2024.

  • Graphics engine is exhibiting similar anomalies to FS2020 engine such as weirdness regarding the water reflections etc
  • Flight models look very similar to FS2020 (little to no improvements)
  • Clouds and cloud shadows look way too dark in certain cases
  • Performance is not there, especially considering all we heard about multi threading work etc.  It should be far better!
  • It looks completely unoptimised!

This is incredibly subjective, and arguably extremely hyperbolic.

MSFS 2020 did not launch as perfect software (no software does), but it was already an extremely accomplished simulator that millions enjoyed right at launch, without any update on top of it.

The fact that you were not satisfied and turned off for a whole year is a very personal point of view, but also the point of view of a vastly outnumbered minority (otherwise it wouldn't have been as successful as it has been).

Hence, saying that it "justifies" the pessimist approach around 2024 is very, very debatable.

I remember very well the launch of MSFS 2020. My memory isn't in any way impaired. I also remember just as well that the first months were plenty enjoyable. Were there issues? Sure. Did they prevent me from enjoying the sim? Not one bit, and I'm very confident the vast majority of users will match this opinion.

But this thread doesn't represent a "pessimist approach" anyway. It's clear-cut (and not even thinly veiled. It's all out in the open and clear as day and pretty ridiculous) FUD.

Sure- I mean by the very nature of posting here we are all sharing our opinions so of course you are correct, my post represents my opinion.  By no means am I trying to represent a majority opinion in any way but I am trying to show that cause for believing that MSFS 2024 might not be a totally finished product upon release or even less of a product than was could be released before it should have been is not an incredibly outlandish one— and that’s why I brought up reminding people about the launch of 2020.  Sure, the sim was playable and had enough features to make it enjoyable if you had a different standard than mine, but it was not at all what it is today.  Today’s version of 2020 is incredible and practically as defined a piece of flight simulation as one can play- but it took almost 4 years to get to this point.

Without all the add on planes, add on scenery, game play extensions like A pilots life, AI traffic packs, ATC improvements etc, the base game of 2020 is actually still lacking a whole lot.  I would suspect that almost no one on this site plays the vanilla version of this game— and that’s ok— but my point is, on day 1 of the release of 2024, without all these add ons being seamlessly brought into 2024( a very unlikely scenario) the vanilla version is going to feel and be way different and I suspect very much lacking in a number of areas.  Perhaps that’s the argument that needs to be occurring or the reason I said people need to remember the launch of 2020.  Take away all the add ons we all use and love out of 2020 and it’s not even close to the sim it is with the add ons.

Like 2020, I guess 2024 has more developing branches. The Grand Canyon and the Alpha branches are totally different and maybe there is already a release candidate branche waiting for November 19th.

In the software business, working with different branches voor different purposes is quite common.

I strongly disagree; the C172 behaves better than in MSFS2020.

I have not had that experience, although this is not even the final product.

Well of course, it's a tech alpha, not the release candidate. But that seems to be very hard to grasp for many of us here.

It's gamers thinking they're getting a final preview build when it's clearly written they aren't, but they struggle to understand that because they've pre-convinced themselves when signing up that that's what they'll get.

Nail. On. Head.

I refer back to my comment regarding the short MSFS2024 teaser trailer released last summer.

Unfortunately, the current Zeitgeist is that everything is binary. The thinking goes: Only what is displayed, actually is. if something isn't shown, then it doesn't exist.
Then people resort to their favourite pitchfork, as per usual.

Nothing has changed since last year, it seems.

I wish I was wrong, but I truly believe that the real beta testers will be those of us who buy MS24 on November 19th.

All software need updates and bug fixes after release. If this is your point then we are all beta testers for all software

Issues are to be expected. MSFS 2024 is indeed a new simulator and not an imperceptible upgrade such as P3D V6.

New lightning, turbulence effects, scenery and weather upgrades, UI improvements and the career system are some of the highlights for me.

Fortunately, I have plenty of space in my SSDs to keep 2020 installed until all major bugs are ironed out.

Ready or not, it's going to be released. Users will do exactly what they did for MSFS 2020. They will receive monthly updates, then come to AVSIM to either complain, mourn, or ask for help.

MSFS

Another concerning thing, when flying above small rivers such as in between mountains, the edges of the river appear a white highlighted color.  Also bridges look like there is a wall underneath similar to FS2020 effect.

Disappointing about the same few on here being insulting to anyone who dares to talk about their MSFS2024 concerns, and even trying to get threads shut down.
They seem to be the fragile ones, and even a bit sinister.  We live in a place with free speech.  Maybe they are against that.
If seems they just want to live in their own echo-chamber where any MSFS2024 discussion is all unicorns and rainbows.
Maybe if we all had a Grand Canyon freebie, we would think different.

Anyway, we have some really great moderators on the Avsim forums.  They will decide when it is time, not them.

Another thing I am seeing in some previews is now white lines popping in and out, seems to be around the edges of the landscape tiles.
Although we have another few weeks to go before release, Jorg said recently that the code is more or less locked down now, but hopefully we can expect a few fixes before then.
We will have to see, but I don't expect much change now.

All ... I am posting this topic to allow for those who are alpha testing Flight Simulator 2024 to weigh in. I was one of the mission developers for Microsoft Flight Simulator: Acceleration! and released many "home grown" missions for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Probably the most "known" mission was called "Palm 90."

And while I have some background in developing content for Flight Simulator, I will say that I am not Alpha testing Flight Simulator 2024 and chose NOT to release any missions or other content for Flight Simulator 2020 because it was not ready. The SDK was not ready. I have spent probably thousands of hours using the SDK for Flight Simulator 2020 to build airports and other content, but chose not to release any of that content, hoping that the SDK's shortcomings could be improved.

I have seen the preliminary content released by those invited by Asobo/Microsoft to the Grand Canyon, and some of the content so far created by the Alpha testing team.

It is not ready. And it would be a mistake for it to be released on November 19. That is my view. I hope others will chime in with their view.

You are a developer and did not release any add-ons for 2020?

But you have a clear statement. That's fine.

But what I see is tons of add-ons and lots of them are working and looking Superior. Planes, Missions, animals, airports.....and and and.

I don't get it why you are waiting.

I know good devs and from them I hear that it is sometimes hard to get what they need for improvements.....but it's an ongoing process and lots of requests are being solved.

Marcus P.
