LR major announcement at the 2016 Flight Sim Expo!

Featured Replies

I have been a holdout for X-Plane, primarily out of sheer guilt over pouring mountains of cash into PFS/P3D, but recently, a the little man on my shoulder finally got through to me and said "listen, stop with this foolishness and look to X-Plane to see if it is better".  I've watched countless videos, read numerous articles online about X-Plane, it's performance, what it offers and I have to say, I'd drop every single piece of FSX/P3D content, if I knew that X-Plane would serve me the sim I'd been wanting for so long.  I just found this thread about the upcoming announcement and I for one, am looking forward to hearing about what LR has in store.

X-Plane already looks and functions incredibly, so I can only imagine what more they can provide.  I'd be willing to drop the $60 right now, but this announcement has me curious and I will wait and see.

I hope they announce a subscription based model (like $50 a year), which would enable them to hire a bunch of people and push updates faster. I don't mind the number, 10, 11 - that's a thing of the past. Monthly updates, even to the hard parts such as weather, scenery ect. would be awesome.

I hope not. I don't want to be forced to have another subscription. I don't like software as a service.

I also do not want a subscription based service!  Guess we shall find out soon.

Well isn't it a subscription already? I mean will you skip a future version?

Subscription in my understanding means: The software can be used as long as I pay regularly. Once I cancel the subscription, the installed software will stop to work (and instead remind me of renewing the subscription). I.e. the way how MS Office works. Or Navigraph Charts.

No, but I still don't want a subscription. For these reasons:

  • It's bad for 3rd party developers, making X-Plane more of a moving target than it already is (see post above).
  • It provides no extra incentive to incorporate new features, whereas a major version release requires new features to build excitement and sales.
  • It's a hassle to track software subscriptions when you need to change or update credit card info. A one-time purchase doesn't have that problem.
  • X-Plane is available on Steam as well as from Laminar, and Steam is a one-shot sales platform. It would be difficult, if not impossible to keep the pricing the same for both one-shot sales and a continuing subscription.
  • You'd probably lose the option of a DVD installation, although I'm guessing we might lose that anyway with the next version, since that seems to be the way software is going. I just don't want to see it go all the way to subscription. I'm still hanging on to my last paid, standalone version of Adobe Photoshop because I hate the subscription idea.

Any thing that is subscription based I would stop using. who wants to rent a flight sim "not me" I stopped using Navigraph Charts just for that reason.

I've used P3D most of the time in a subscription based model - monthly license... It was my best option, since paying $190 for a software I would keep installing and uninstalling would be a pain....

Up at 5:30am and shortly on my way down to Cosford. Should be a very interesting day for X-Plane news. I think possibly the best place for news will be https://www.facebook.com/groups/XPDedicated/

Wycliffe will be interviewing both Ben and Austin after the talk and I'm sure others will be posting in the group as well. It's simply easier to post pictures straight to FB rather that using forum posts and I'll also try posting on the group if I can get WiFi there.

I don't like FB nor subscribtions. Thanks for posting here.

Let me guess: XP11 as seen in some videos but also VR support. Both for around spring. Probably no Vulkan etc. but remain with old OpenGL 4.1, thanks to Macs.

Looking forward for the Good News Tony! I really hope to see some basic aspects mentioned for XP11, like weather, seasonal textures and AI, among others...

Tony, please, post here as not everyone use fb.

I'm also not on  facebook.

But I can still view the pictures/videos and read the commentaries. No problem for me.

With that said I don't mind getting the updates here, too.

Just heard that LR are speaking right now. XP11 is due in November
