What is the difference between keeping it in the default location and moving it + telling MSFS where you moved it in order to download the files there on the occasion of the update? 🤷‍♂️

If you want a stable MSFS, install it in the default location.

In fact, for any software, even non video game software, install the software in the default location if you want the software to be stable and free of bugs.

Why?  Because the developers that developed that software, and their QA team, will typically test the default settings of the software first, and then test extraneous cases later.  If they are in a rush to test, the default settings get tested first, while extraneous cases may not have enough time to be tested.

This goes not only for default location, but default software settings in general (so default menu settings, default configuration settings, etc)..  Developers and the QA team will generally test the default settings first.  From there, they test extraneous cases.

TLDR: For any software, games included, use the default settings during installation if you want the software to be as stable as possible.

The beta is Asobos intermediate fix before the next full update.

Putting the "beta" label on the hotfix was just an elegant solution to release the fixes very quickly without requiring another beta phase... 🙂

The word elegant and a MS update process is  contradiction in terms 😏. From the start it has been convoluted and prone to fail for many. Rocket science or not,  I do not trust the MS team in charge of dispatching updates to do a tight job.

Besides, if Asobo still works on the fix it logically means that it is not yet completed. So the beta is not a fix it is a beta. A half baked update of an update.

Anyway, my point is that the state of the sim is not great but good enough to play and we should let Asobo do the job instead of playing the Neumann game and forcing out a premature release of the fixes.

Signing off this nonsense of a thread.

complete nonsense this, never ever done that and no problems.

It's a matter of luck then if you don't experience problems.

I say this as a professional software developer with experience in QA as well.  QA teams and almost all test documents will cover the default case firstExtraneous cases always come after the default case in software testing.  You would know this if you are professional software developer or professional QA tester.

If you don't experience problems when installing in a location other than the default location, then perhaps the software developers and the 3rd party add on developers tested properly.  If you are unlucky though and developers and 3rd party add on developers didn't test properly (especially the free add-ons, such as the free add-ons at flightsim.to), well, then you will run into bugs.

In general, if you want your software to be stable - not just MSFS mind you, but any software - you want to use default settings when you install the software.

Reading through this thread and opinions of some of the avsim crowd makes me say: "Thank God I'm not a coder these days".

Dropping a release to soon and there they go: Not tested enough / what a pitty / they don't listen to us....

Not dropping it too soon: Is that how you treat your customers?

I don't know the answer. But  Microsoft in the forum posted in at least one place that it is less likely to have to reinstall if the program is not in the default location.

e.g. https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/how-to-change-the-installation-path-of-installed-packages-inc-community-folder/471682

"If MSFS ever needs to be reinstalled, pointing the content manager to the location of this custom folder should prevent the download of all the packages." - Microsoft

Nonsense. I am playing PC games for almost 30y and almost never use the default location. Never had an issue due to the installation location. In contrast, for years, it could have been a basic mistake to install e.g. FS9 or FSX into the default location due to admin issues with some files ending up on the C drive.

Besides that, what is the "default" location for many games that come with a library location totally free to place, e.g. STEAM or Origin? Or the fact that besides C:\, almost every rig has an individual drive and folder structure? What is "default" on those rigs? You cant be seriously suggesting to install all software on the C:\ drive, no? But ehis would be basically the only true default location available on each and every rig...

So, no, your statement does no even make a tiny bit of sense, sorry

"Beta" is just a label they attached to this release, just a label. In regards of quality and features completness this release very much is in line with the other recent hotfixes.

The update process is really not hurting. Doing MSFS beta runs, I only had to do a full sim install once when I choose to ignore the instructions. But spending the 2 minutes and reading and applying the instructions ever since worked as smooth as the beta itself is working. You are free to not use the beta hotfix of course but the fears why people are avoiding it are a bit overreacted imho.

I haven't had a CTD in months.

I'm enjoying the beta.

Over the weekend I'll be buying the Kodiak 100, that'll keep me occupied over Christmas.

Public beta + Accuseason + Kodiak 100 = Challenge, immersion and fun.

I kind of don't understand folks who won't install the beta, thus depriving themselves of the improvments.

But, whatever.

Right click on the game, properties, betas, select the beta you want to install.

Download and launch XBox Insider Hub https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/xbox-insider-hub/9pldpg46g47z?SilentAuth=1&wa=wsignin1.0#activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Join MSFS beta from there.

Open the XBox app and MSFS should notify you of an update pending. That's the beta hotfix.

You don't need one... just select the beta from the drop down menu above and the download will start.

Thank you very much.

I am using the Beta and I am happy with it.  To me, I class it more like an opt-in developer build.
People do this with the FBW Airbus, so maybe people with a similar mindset do the same.
Live weather may still be a problem, yes, but some people say it works fine, others say it isn't accurate.  I believe this has been happening from day one to some extent.

I have taken a risk that if something goes wrong with the proper update, I might have to do a full install.
I am on a non-standard install path, so should be fine, but this hasn't saved some people in the past.

At the same time, I do understand the reasons for people not doing it - personal preference and certain concerns - if you don't want it, no problem here, and I am sorry you won't get the full update before the holiday (although I still hold out a small glimmer of hope for tomorrow night).

So, I am sad if people who won't get the fix now before the holiday, but the thing that saddens me the most is the way this forum reflects more and more what I see in real life - that is, the polarisation of views to the extremes.  There doesn't seem to be any middle ground anymore, which normally, from my experience, usually is where the story sits.

It ranges from people severely criticising Asobo to the point of being offensive at one end of the spectrum, to those who seem to defend Asobo like family, and mercilessly try to shoot down anyone who dares to make a criticism.  Maybe the people on the middle ground don't comment so much, that seems to be the way.

We all know the sim isn't perfect, and probably never will be, and it has some holes in it at the moment, but Asobo aren't evil, they are struggling to get the features working the way they want, have a massive list to work down, and they definitely need to improve some of the update procedures.  But the sim is flyable enough to be enjoyable, and it definitely is worth jumping on board for the ride.  Even if it is two steps forward, one step back, it is exciting to see it develop, and I won't be going anywhere for sure!

And here we are! As usual, those who point out that things are not ok are whinging.

As usual, opinions are not allowed if they do not praise MS and ASOBO.

Been there, done that, when SU5 broke everything last summer, with ctd's and all, some forum members were accused of imagining things.
