Randazzo: MSFS saved sim community from slow bleeding death

Lets rephrase. Are you stating that MSFS 2020/2024 does not have capabilities to have high fidelity planes etc?

What does that matter? And how do you know only the older simmers buy high fidelity add-ons? And even if the majority of hi-fi addon buyers are older, so what? Why is it so bad that a sim platform could accommodate all types of users and ages? It almost seems like some around here just can't stand their niche little world is being opened up to a wider audience.

If you don't want voice control the UI for FSHud is browser based, or menu based on the Sim computer, so can run on any device (PC, Tablet, Phone) on the network.

How times have changed. I run a CDU for the PMDG737/777 on my iPad. Cost £13. So clever and the alternative of buying a standalone mini-computer 22 years ago for several hundred pounds just shows how technology has moved.

You can use keyboard or controller buttons to interact with it, but I just use a mouse to click on the menu items in the browser on a separate PC. When I tried to use the keyboard shortcuts from a remote PC browser it didn't recognise them, but as that was not a priority for me I didn't report it.

I have buttons on my yoke and GoFlight T8 unit configured for RC4. Via WideFS they’re fine with RC4 running on a separate PC.

The models can come from FSLTL or AIG, and it has built-in support for AIG flightplans, so it not only responds to AIG AI, it fully Air Traffic Controls them. It will also control real-time traffic supplied by FSLTL.

That was tried in RC4 and wasn’t a success. The sim would eventually win and Ai behind you would overtake at breakneck speed! 🤣

It sounds a plausible alternative. 👍

It was a real shame when GoFlight went under but Steve has done a great job with Pollypot. Without him my expensive hardware would just be a dust gatherer.

Absolutely!  Especially given how well the hardware was made.  I bought my MCP PRO 15 years ago and it's still going strong.

Flight simming is alive and well BECAUSE of the XBox and the gaming community.

Without those two, we'd all be attending flight simming's funeral procession.

It's not just airports. It's things like Aivlasoft's EFB and the hard work to program GoFlight hardware.

Ray, I don't know if your remarks are for 2020 or 2024, I am still on 2020 until such time I feel 2024 offers the same stability and all my add-ons are supported, then I will make the move, the same way I migrated from P3Dv4.5 eight months after MSFS 2020 was released.

But getting to your questions, I am using 14 GoFlight modules all easily programmed with FSUIPC, my Aivlasoft EFB v2 (on a network PC) works flawlessly, and as far as airports add-ons are concerned, most of the reputable developers do pay some attention to their AFCAD.

The only part where I sympathise with your feelings is about being dependent on a working server that is not under my control, fortunately MSFS 2024 will become similar to 2020 so all your software will remain on your hard disk, only the world scenery will be delegated to the goodwill of Microsoft servers, and that I can live with, whereas the initial total streaming concept of 2024 was an absolute no-go for me.

All my previous simulators were essentially used for airliners where ORBx high altitude sceneries had little to no importance to me, now with the high fidelity of the Bing world rendering, I switched to mostly GA flights because I can visualise the real sceneries I have known in the real world. I realise that - in your case - flying Concorde at 60'000 feet will reduce or negate the interest of this aspect, not to mention that whenever you take off and land with that wonderful aircraft, there is no time to contemplate any scenery at all however beautiful it may be...

I treated myself at a UK flight sim show in Birmingham to multiple GoFlight units in 2003 and all still work. They really did build quality stuff. The MCP Pro was gifted by Pete Dowson and is also perfect. A dirty v/s wheel was cleaned by Chris Tutthill aka @tutmeister

MS and ASOBO jumped in IMO not to destroy the competition but rather to "survive" as long as possible, erasing from the memory of grumpy simmers like me the fate MS FLIGHT had, and marked me so negatively towards their business model.

They understood that the only way it can be profitable is by opening it to a wider user base and bringing to the core sim as much as possible, so that potential users spend their money on the platform, preferably through it's own marketplace, instead of in a myriad of complements / addons  by 3pds sold through their own stores and business models, most of them costing way more than the base sim itself...

I have to be thankful to MS and ASOBO for what they have given us, and recognize that I have never felt so overwhelmed by a flight simulator like with FS 2020 and now FS 2024, to the point of already having forgiven MS for what they did to their users (me included...) with MS FLIGHT 🙂

and... at the same time, hope for the best regarding those 3pds I still feel proud to have been a client, through the years, like, HiFi, FSLabs, Aerosoft, Just Flight, Orbx,...

I must confess, I have no idea what you are getting at. The suggestion that high fidelity simulation is dying is, I'd go as far as saying objectively wrong. We have an incredible amount of planes released or in the pipeline that are of much higher quality, both in terms of system depth, accuracy and depth than almost any time in flight simulation history. We're even getting thrown the most insane prestige projects throw at us, like the A380, for the staggering sum of free.

X-Plane on the other side is also doing very well, with a lot of amazing planes to choose from currently.

Every developer has seen a massive influx of support and seen a big increase of purchases. There's more interest, more money and more support in flight simulation than there has ever been before at any point in history. Flight simulation isn't depending on some old guard small group of people to carry anything.
