Never mind trees and DX12, did they say anything about fixing the terrain morphing? This has got to be the most horrible and overlooked problem.

Looking forward to the next one and I hope they‘ll finally address the numerous terrain issues.

They didn't say anything about the morphing, the only terrain issue they talked about was the coastline glitch from the Feedback Snapshot, where they said that they're actively looking into it and that they're aware it's a big deal (it was missing from the summary, added it now).

I think they're well aware of all the terrain issues by now, but fixing them is going to be tricky like the horizon line bug. I will try to bring forward a question regarding their progress on those in the next Q&A, once the excitement over the performance improvements has toned down a little.

Well I am really impressed overall.  I am not too fussed about DX12 coming late to PC if the optimisations already work with DX11.

I think DX12 for PC will probably follow a month or two after the Xbox launch.
One thing they may be considering for PC is a DX11 / DX12 toggle for people who have older cards, and can't afford, or find a supply, of newer models.
This would require a bit of extra coding for the PC version of course, so maybe why it is slightly delayed - there must be some reason for it.

Even after the DX11 performance optimisations, I still think DX12 will be of benefit to PC users; just for the sake of the extra features they want to include, and maybe a bit of performance  (like what happened with P3D).

All round though, excellent news!

Oh!  and for trolls who gas-lighted the 'whiners' about the tree LOD problem, and said we were making it up or it didn't matter: -
It case you missed it, it mattered to Asobo - they found the bug - they fixed it!..  Nah-nah-ne-nah-na!  :uwe_merm:

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

@ChaoticBeauty Many Thanks for the Summary, much appreciated 🙂

Highlights are the mentions about improving/working on VR, so much they can do and so much to improve upon. The Trees is a big one as well, something so simple yet so immersion breaking so I'm glad that's sorted, and of course the performance improvements across the board will be very much welcomed (especially for the aforementioned VR).

Downlights are the Horizon Line Bug, it reeks of "ignoring" it early on and not doing anything about it and now it's buried deep in the rendering code so hard to fix, that's not good. Their ignorance towards DLSS is a bit weird, as they're gonna be working on VR they should well know by now that DLSS brings great performance improvements so I find their response a bit strange 🤨

Pico Neo3 Link VR - Windows 11 64bit, Gigabyte Z590 Aorus Elite Mobo, i7-10700KF CPU, Gigabyte RX 9070 XT OC 16gb (AMD GPU), 32gig Corsair 3600mhz RAM, SSD x2 + M.2 SSD 1tb x1

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

The boys made some massive performance improvements. This was about as good a news as I could have imagined.

7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 96GB DDR5 | 4K G-Sync | Win11 Pro

Sounds promising.

But one thing I don't understand, they'll be testing and developing the XBox version on PC. The XBox version will have to be DX12, but the PC is staying DX11 for now. I'm confused.

AMD Ryzen R9 9950X3D | Asus Astral RTX 5080 OC | 32 GB DDR5 6000 CL30 | 3440x1440 G-Sync | Logitech Pro Throttles Rudder Yoke Panels | Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS | TrackIR 5 | Oculus Rift S

It's just a different rendering target when they compile.  I am guessing they want to do more with DX12 on PC before bringing it over. Series S/X only works with DX12.

Yep, that's why I was wondering why they will keep it DX11 on PC. But I hope you're right, maybe they'll keep polishing the DX12 version before releasing it on PC. It would make sense since there are a thousand different hardware configurations on PC, but XBox is a lot more predictable with just two different versions.

AMD Ryzen R9 9950X3D | Asus Astral RTX 5080 OC | 32 GB DDR5 6000 CL30 | 3440x1440 G-Sync | Logitech Pro Throttles Rudder Yoke Panels | Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS | TrackIR 5 | Oculus Rift S

DX12 is "close to the metal", i.e. it depends a lot more on hardware specific optimisations. This is comparably easy to do on a well-defined target such as Xbox Series S and X, but a lot more complicated when targetting all the possible GPUs for PCs.

My simming system: AMD Ryzen 5800X3D, 32GB RAM, RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB, LG 38" 3840x1600

I'm somewhat concerned about the optimisations being done for the DirectX 11 render path, and then having to work on the switch to DirectX 12 which is a radically different API. It's a bit confusing really. They don't know how it will affect the PC, but they have already worked on it for the Xbox version which is supposed to be almost the same. Who knows.

Still, those engine improvements are extremely impressive, and on the other hand it's good that those stuck with older hardware can continue to use the simulator with no problems until the shortages start getting mitigated. It means I can reap the benefits of these optimisations on my old system, and since I'm having trouble with disk swapping in more demanding areas, I'm particularly excited about the memory consumption improvements.

I felt the same way with the flickering clouds, so satisfying isn't it. Terrain morphing is next!

Holy moly watching these new performance optimizations 😄. I don't get it, we will get a massive performance updates on 27th of July, why the fuss for DX12 😅? Maybe as someone said here, it may require them to have toggle to switch between DX11 and DX12 on PC like some games.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 64GB DDR5 6000MHZ RAM, RX7900XT, FreeSync 165hz 1440p display

Great news about trees! But is it just the radius at more northerly/southerly latitudes that's being fixed, I wonder? The issues certainly appear to be more pronounced there but the tree radius is still pretty awful in the UK, for example, and literally nothing like it was at release or with the tree mods.

Showing steady progress now, well done all involved at Asobo/MS/ and all others contributing in making this sim.

The 5900X doesn't need any optimizations.  MSFS can't stress it.

Cheers
