AVSIM has become a toxic community ... a farewell

The whole world has chamged since IN and smartphones were introduced.

People nowadays are having a shorter fuse.

But in 30 years from now people will state that the 2020s where a gentle period.

  • Cry me a river! Label it toxic because people disagree with you seems to be the norm in today's world. You have a total of 16 post since joining in 2019. Your contributions are staggering!

  • AVSim is not an airport, you don't have to announce your departure.

  • Too many people take simming, and in fact gaming in general way too seriously, as if it is the very core of their existence. They need to get a grip. Sorry to hear of your experience.

Great thread! This is why I stick with AVSIM! 👍

Bro started his 16th post in almost 6 years because he wants to leave Avsim after people disagreed on his MS24 not ready for release (his opinion) post and now claims the place is toxic. This is like when you calmly tell someone no and they start screaming not to yell at them. Gimme a bleeping break.

He just shared his opinion on the state of the sim. The replies he got are there for all to see. This isn’t he said, she said. Things turn personal and negative. Zero tolerance for opposing views. These style arguments are occurring regularly in many topics on AVSIM. Take a look at any multi-page thread and you are almost certainly going to find the discussion trashed by posters fighting about something. I participate in a lot of forums for various reasons and this place is easily the least welcoming, most childish and outright toxic one of the bunch. Of course there are a lot of great posters here, but they all know who they are.

As a former MSFS developer who worked for Microsoft, I posted a topic here that I had hoped would spark conversation about the release of the latest version of my favorite Flight Simulator. It quickly became apparent that there are many highly toxic users here in the years since I first visited it. I was saddened by most of the comments. Although a few were respectful to the conversation I was trying to start, it's become evident to me that this is not a place where reasonable conversation can take place.

Adios.

I fully agree. After MSFS2020 was released 4 years ago, I have blocked or ignored at least 20-24 newcomers in AVSIM, because of non-sense kind of posts that add nothing to our hobby, like you said, toxic.

And, by the way, all of them were NOT previous FSX/P3D users.

I thought this thread was super and fun to read.  Sorry to the OP and hope his feelings will recover from the trauma.

Bring on 2024!

It is a legitimate post, why do we have to respond with such negative attitude!

I concur, we can sometimes become "WORD NOT ALLOWED" and be quite disconsiderate, however I wouldn't put the blame on Avsim itself.

There's a woman in Pilot2ATC (EGKA tower) who sometimes tells me "you're garbled". As I used to live near Shoreham and once met a woman, I support this toxic immersion.

I have been on Avsim for 20 years and I can personally say I have seen these forums decline in their respectful content over the years from all parties, yes, sorry to say including moderators.

Whether we like it or not (or care to acknowledge), Society/norms have also changed in that 20 years as well.

Back under Tom's rule of Avsim, you will recall it was very common for subscribers to Avsim to receive a "vacation", if not a complete ban, from Avsim for topics/comments that were posted that were deemed unacceptable.

Personally, I think the moderators today do a very good job...yes, there may be times a topic has run, but, the mods do allow opinions on a topic to run their course before closing a thread.

I suspect it's not an easy, nor thankful, role.

Avsim provides a great service for flight simmers...a one stop shop for all things FS related.

Just as in life, you are going to encounter people you don't agree with...deal with it. (Unhappy here? Go to the flight sim posts on Reddit...where things never get personal!)  🤣

.....most of them are rather old, frustrated men 😉

Sorry, that had to be said 🙃

I would say it’s more like many here are “old school” and have been around since the FS95 days. We tend to see what MS2024 is bringing compared to what we had in the past and are very grateful for it. Sure we yammer back and forth with each other in here but I don’t see this as any different than the BS’ing I see going on at any VFW or Union hall I’ve ever been in. It’s what we do and at the end of the day most of us understand it’s never personal and we all know how to have a the metaphorical beer at the end of it.

First off, let me say that I cannot comment about the Sim in question because I don't use 2020; I'm a dedicated FS9'er!

Regarding AVSIM... I've been here for 15 years or so, and have no Issues about what's posted here. There are some from time to time that lean towards the argumentative, but I give them a wide berth and watch from the sidelines. If it's a Thread that has interest to me, I'll participate. If not, I'll just read and keep my opinions to myself.

AVSIM is still a valuable FlightSim resource to me because of the File Library, and Bob Scott is a fellow Simmer that I struck up a friendship with back in the day when a few of us would meet for Breakfast every couple months and talk shop. He was the one who urged me to migrate to FS9 from FS2002... that's how long our 'friendship' has been!

I am not saying this for a fact but at times I can't help but wonder if some developers don't have "plants" on these forums who's mission is to berate or belittle those saying anything, even in the form of an honest opinion or question, which might insinuate less than perfection toward their product.  They know there's always no shortage of impressionable folk who love to pile on once the momentum gets going.

I often find myself  feeling empathy for the underdog  having been there a time or two myself as most of us have. That's not always beneficial because  at times there is good reason they are the underdog. I just don't like to see folk  being disrespected or insulted or called a liar on a hobby forum.

I'm sure Microsoft like most companies has a very competent legal team if they need defending and can get by without forum thugs looking out for them.

No one in mind, just wonder.
