AVSIM has become a toxic community ... a farewell

I doubt if they would speak like that if it was face to face because they are cowards and get off on being rude to people here with a certain amount of anonymity.
However, I did catch up with one at a flight sim convention (sadly missed in the UK) a few years ago.  That was...  Interesting, and confirmed my suspicions about the type of character.

So did you tell him face to face that he was a coward? 😉

I do agree folks might to be tougher when communicating on the internet compared to when looking someone in the eye.

Overall, the Avsim forum, the moderators, and the community is good.

Yes! Happy to be here ☺️

  • Cry me a river! Label it toxic because people disagree with you seems to be the norm in today's world. You have a total of 16 post since joining in 2019. Your contributions are staggering!

  • AVSim is not an airport, you don't have to announce your departure.

  • Too many people take simming, and in fact gaming in general way too seriously, as if it is the very core of their existence. They need to get a grip. Sorry to hear of your experience.

AVSIM has become a toxic community? Avsim was always a toxic community! 🤣That's the key to its success! 😁

Avsim is a trick! Their people control your webcam and try to observe what controllers you have and then post fake messages encouraging you buy Avsim branded yokes and throttles.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

The most modern scientific equipment has only managed to record high toxicity levels if you attempt to prove anything about MSFS empirically in an XP lab, or anything about XP in a MSFS lab.   Usually the lab detonates.  Other than that, toxicity levels are generally safe for human consumption.

Probably the best post ever!

I find generally Avsim is a good place. Certainly amongst some of the more established members who I have grown to know over the years. Having said that, yes, there is a minority of people who are clearly unappy with their place in the world and appear to jump at any opportunity to argue, for what seems to me, is often solely for the purpose of an argument. I'm often surprised at how some guys will pull someone up on a word or phrase and misinterpret it, without responding to the actual subject matter of the post!

One must never, ever take the forum chatter personally. Or at least try not to.  And we can all agree that we disagree. Period.

Lately, I can't help but notice that the people who scream the loudest about toxicity in this community are the ones engaging in this exact behavior, sometimes single-handedly derailing a thread to the point of it being closed. Sure, flightsimmers are passionate and often have strong opinions on certain topics, but that's not toxicity.

By the way, this is what Jörg Neumann, head of MSFS had to say about "grumpy simmers": https://youtu.be/E6X6YLI_LUs?si=9Xa_c7YRnPsQuisO&t=1071

The word toxic gets so easily thrown about. There is a need for some real concrete milkshakes to be handed around the world.

Avsim in general is tame.

Some individuals can’t are really negative. I actually feel sorry for them that they can’t see anything positive but toxic is a real stretch.

I would say that I am a "grumpy simmer" to a certain extent. I like things to be as perfect as they can be, which is why I grumble about stuff like those "land bars" 🙂 It is also why I want detailed terminal interior environments, high resolution textures on every airport building (not just the ones than can be seen from the gate), DEM data that consistently loads at a sensible distance, and correct AI representations of circular oil tanks. Whilst we will never achieve absolute perfection, striving for it will get us that much closer than if we simply accept everything without comment.

Flightsim developers need grumpy simmers 😉

No comment. Just gearing up for the next development Q/A coming up in the next 7+ hours as I write this post. Popcorn ready.

I will say this and be truly honest about something though is that if I were "grumpy" or "disappointed" about something so much I'd probably never even bother with it anymore and move on to something else. Its software folks.

How long have you been on the internet?!

It seems like people these days resort to attacking the individual rather than the opinion.  Even in this thread people are going after the OP’s personal credentials.  Thats a problem and speaks to the main issue.  Debate the opinion but not if the person having the opinion should even be allowed to.

I barely post here but with the release of the new sim I’m stopping by more often.  I am surprised how heated people can get over a sim and a release of an aircraft but I respect that some people have a lot of time and money wrapped into this hobby.  That being said, I don’t think it’s an unfair ask to participate in civil discourse as often as possible.

Nope.

IMO, a "grumpy simmer" is someone that encounters anything excellent as nothing more than 'to be expected'. They also complain about the same few personal bugbear issues repeatedly on many different threads, and vocalise a litany of problems, rather than see anything positive from a new feature or product – especially if it was done differently in the past.

Rather than be constructively critical to seek changes, they are critical because that's all they can offer. They are thieves of joy.

Happily, there aren't that many of those types around.
