Didn't they just release a city update for both sims? When I look into your post history, I seriously think you need to touch some grass.

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator will be continuously developed over the next ten years. During this time, fans will receive patches, updates, new modules and airplanes, as well as add-ons for which the ser

  • My opinion of Asobo has done a complete 180 in a very short time. After 2020's rough release I knew better than to preorder 2024, but even I was surprised at how underdeveloped it was at release. Howe

2020 runs great 2024 does not they need to focus on 2024.

I stopped using MSFS, both versions. I still have 2024 installed just to check in every now and then. I switched back over to the dark side for a while with 12.2.

Why? It. Just. Works! Pros and cons for both that I don't want to get in to here. However what I will say is that I lost confidence in Asobo a long time ago. It's all words. Dev question on twitch is like question time with politicians. Once they start sorting things out with actions, I'll believe them. Until then, I'll keep periodically checking 2024 out, but I certainly wont waste much time using it. (And yes I am aware it works fine for some people. To each their own, some people just have lower standards).

With the latest Beta release, MSFS 2024 was outstanding in my short flight in the Fenix A320 yesterday. I am finally ready to transition primarily to MSFS 2024. I do hope that the 2020 only sceneries continue to get updated for 2024 compatibility, but the current build runs great for me.

Cheers, Pete

........and yet Asobo are apparently going to introduce a download option in SU3 for those of us who prefer to see crisp, clear runway textures when we are on final approach

I'd bet a pint or two of good beer that they went cloud-only to vastly reduce their download / streaming costs.

Now they only have to serve the elements that people actually use, whereas before, many people downloaded every single addon and scenery whether they ever used it or not.

Methinks it's been a tremendous savings for them.

But as you say, there can be problems with a "cloud only" architecture, and so they will be re-introducing the ability to locally cache specific add-ons, etc.

This will be of benefit for folks that frequently fly the same add-ons over the same scenery - which seems to be a good portion. 🤙

FWIW, tho I've run into the short delay when departing with a new addon or from a new airport, I've never run into it on arrival.

Not saying it doesn't happen, but I think that must be a far more rare occurrence since you're approaching the airfield so slowly (even in a jetliner) that the runway and other major textures have time to stream in during your approach.

Clarification

I wonder about the extent to which MSFS of either year's vintage is being coded by AI.  This would explain a lot that has been, up to now,  inexplicable.   Code writing code.

As stated above if you just want a high quality, reliable sim its X-plane 12.2.  It's coded by people who actually answer questions intelligibly and seem to have a modicum of respect for their customers.

It only took 8 pages for someone to mention XP, even though it has no bearing on the discussion. Here's the nub of Asobo's problem. MSFS 2020 is designed for a certain level of hardware and MSFS 2024 has higher hardware requirements. With those higher hardware requirements potentially comes more features. Those new features require more testing to get them to work correctly. MSFS 2024 was rushed out the door and has been a buggy mess since release. Collectively, all this has led to most of the users (at least according to the Navigraph flightsim survey) to stay with MSFS 2020. Eventually, as more users either abandon flight simming or buy new hardware, MSFS 2024 will become the dominant app in that market segment. Before anyone starts yelling at me, I use MSFS 2024 almost exclusively. I've sequentially uninstalled XP and P3d, but I've left a skeleton version of MSFS 2020 on my PC to test 3rd party apps. I've learned to put up with the issues in MSFS 2024.

I'm waiting to see which flightsim has the most attractive advertising videos and slogans.

6, actually. And yes it does have a bearing.

They regress more than they advance. Lots of issues in 2020 simply carried over to 2024. And still present now. Just ask the guys at FSLTL.

Being a perfectionist in my life has cost me dearly 🙂  so I demand that my sims are cranky and improving daily.

This is despicable, throwing the 2020 simmers under a Bus.

As with most things in life, especially with technology, the bus moves forward and most people will get on it. If you choose not to get on the bus, then you will eventually be left behind.  Not saying this to me mean, its just the way life is today.

It's adorable that the members and presidents of the Asobo bashers club keep trying their darndest, but the reality remains:

  • 77% of the kind of simmers who'd use Navigraph and do airliner simming (i.e. Serious ™️ Simmers) prefer the MSFS platform, 2/3 of those on 2020 and 1/3 on 2024 (survey was done between 2024 release and SU1)
  • 2024 continues to improve and is at a much better state at 5 months old than at release. As others have stated, most other new sim releases took a non-trivial amount of time to stabilize and mature too.
  • 2020 is still around as a stellar stable platform, and continues to receive updates from MS/Asobo
  • There are a fair amount of us who're able to use 2024 without issues. And that doesn't take away from an equally fair amount who do have issues. Such is the reality with a huge variety of users with different hardware/add-ons/peripherals combinations.
  • 2024 brings a lot of advancements to the core simulation, as well as extras, and of course visual fidelity in the twin earth representation.. those are just facts. The fact there were a lot of bugs at release doesn't take away from that.
  • 2024 is the future, period. Most 3rd party devs are starting to focus on 2024 now, and have declared future add-ons are for 2024 only. Even PMDG, ever the critic of MS/Asobo and flux in the sim platform, just posted: https://forum.pmdg.com/forum/main-forum/general-discussion-news-and-announcements/353837-30apr25-pmdg-777-200er-is-go-for-launch "It is an exciting time to be part of the PMDG team. I dare say, with our products beginning to flow into MSFS 2024, it is almost fun. It hasn't been fun for some time- so that is a really positive development!" 🙂
  • Despite all the hyperbole that gets thrown around here on avsim about MSFS, the above points will remain the reality.. and most of the major 3rd party devs out there will still continue to develop exclusively or mostly for the MSFS platform (with some of them currently splitting between 2024 and 2020, but most/all of them transitioning to 2024-only mode soon)
  • If you can't deal with the fact that 2024 is the future and most 3rd party devs will only focus on it, well... that's tough
  • And oh, MS/Asobo didn't promise we'd just pay one-time for MSFS 2020 and we'll keep getting new features and improvements perpetually. What they did promise is that they're in it with the franchise for the long-haul. That clearly shows with the amount of investment they poured into 2024, and the amount of 3rd party partnerships they secured. And regardless, they've also said MSFS 2020 will be supported for multiple more years.

Some people are better at understanding reality and living within it--others live in a perfection fantasy and are therefore easily stressed when their expectations are not met.  I've been an apologist for MS/A over the years though am perplexed as to some odd judgements  that I would not have predicted after using 2020 since its launch.  We were are duly blown away by this innovation and most of us coped with issues along the way in the slow and steady progress to get 2020 where it eventually got.  Since the early days I learned to use the tool that was available to the best of my ability.  That is living in the real world.  Despite not having the full complement of airliners I'm use to I am finding myself in 2024 now 80+% of the time.   Been enjoying the heck out of the AS CRJ v2 in 2024 it's been fabulous!

I'm super thankful LR and XP exist it is awesome to know there is another civilian sim worth its salt.
